Expected Heating/Cooling Cost Savings

We have all seen the claims. Companies will put it in writing (certificate) that you will save 50% on your heating/cooling costs. There are two companies making that claim here in the metroplex. The certificate will explain the many hoops you must jump through to prove your home is not performing to the standards they claimed. If you are willing to take the necessary time and effort to prove this, the most you can hope to be refunded is $500 as stated in very small print on the certificate.

Doesn't it seem logical that you must know what kind of windows are in a home to start with before you start making outrageous claims of expected heating/cooling savings? There are so many factors involved in determining an educated guess of savings. Your utility provider (TXU or Oncor) can help you with this. They would ask the following:

  • What type of window do you presently have
  • Is it single pane or double pane
  • What direction does your home face
  • What is square footage of windows vs. square footage of home
  • How many people live in the home
  • Is anyone home during daytime and for how long

As you can see, there are many factors to consider. Lanham Window Company has made many inquiries to TXU to ask about expected savings. While we have installed windows since 1974, we have witnessed only a handful of customers that have actually cut their heating/cooling costs in half. These are customers that had the absolute worse conditions in a window and replaced with a superior quality vinyl window. We have concluded, with the help of TXU, that most homes built in the metroplex can expect to save somewhere around 20-30% on their heating/cooling costs.
